The seventh, and last, of the seven authoritative transmissions is the category of aural lineages. Often this same term is used to denote a type of teaching that is transmitted in a very intimate setting with a teacher only bestowing it upon one student at a time. However, in the present context it is much more closely related to visionary experiences and therefore it is similar to pure visions and what are termed close or direct lineages (nye brgyud). Therefore, in this context aural lineages are those teaching transmissions heard directly from an authoritative source in a visionary encounter. Though it should be noted that most of the examples included under this category do include the typical treasure punctuation (gter tshegs), so it is likely that this category represents an intersection between pure visions and terma. The aural lineages included in the Khyentse Kabab include a series of texts related to the Eight Sādhana Teachings, or Kagye (bka' brgyad), that were brought to Tibet by Guru Rinpoche and consist of the eight wrathful deity practices he received from the eight Indian Vidyādharas (rig 'dzin brgyad), with each practice representing the personal yidam deity of one of the Vidyādharas. These practices were received by Khyentse Wangpo in a visionary journey in which he encountered Guru Rinpoche, encircled by his eight manifestations (gu ru mtshan brgyad), whom bestowed upon him these transmissions. Following this section, there is a series of supporting instructions, including a volume of works on the famed Oral Instructions on the Gradual Path of the Wisdom Essence (zhal gdams lam rim ye shes snying po) and another volume of works by prominent authors presenting overviews and annotations on the Guhyagarbha Tantra and the Kagye, followed by the customary inclusion of aspiration prayers and invocations of auspiciousness to close out the collection.
