The second of the seven authoritative transmission is the category of earth treasures- actual artifacts concealed within the terrain by powerful masters in the distant past that are later located and removed by a destined treasure-revealer (gter ston) through visionary means. Most commonly associated with Padmasambhava's legendary sojourn in Tibet during the 8th century, earth treasures are the cornerstone of the Nyingma Terma tradition and the mythology that envelopes it. It is a world in which the reincarnations of Guru Rinpoche's twenty-five disciples continue to further his cause and do his bidding in the present day through the revelation of religious objects, ritual substances, and scriptures that were entrusted to their stewardship lifetimes ago, but only come to the fore and reemerge into the public sphere when the circumstances, not to mention their fierce other-worldly guardians, call for or allow their revelation. The role of the treasure-revealer, or tertön, thus involves a unique type of pedigree- one in which past life identity and present day spiritual accomplishment must coincide in order for this role to be assumed. In terms of Khyentse Wangpo, these prerequisites were abundantly fulfilled. He was believed to be the combined incarnation of Tibetan King Trisong Deutsen and the Indian master Vimalamitra. He revealed treasure under the name Pema Ösel Dongak Lingpa, which was said to be his thirteenth successive lifetime as an active tertön, and was dubbed the Fifth (and final) Tertön King (gter ston rgyal po lnga pa). Often signing his compositions as "the Lake-born Guru's favorite servant" (mtsho skyes bla ma dgyes pa'i 'bangs), Khyentse Wangpo was the quintessential embodiment of the Terma tradition. Nevertheless, this section of the Khyentse Kabab is not only a record of his own revelations, but also of his stewardship of the earth treasures revealed by his cohort, the great Chogyur Lingpa. The careers of these two tertöns are deeply interwoven, to the point that they seemed to share responsibility for certain treasure cycles, a fact that is attested to throughout the Kabab collection with the widespread inclusion of Chogling's revelations, often referenced simply as the "New Treasures" (gter gsar).
